Food is the basic necessity of all living beings on the planet earth. From humble bacteria to human beings all are striving for the food since their existence. Pakistan is an agriculture country with fortunate growth of wheat, rice, sugarcane, fruits and vegetables along with other food grains.
The whole world is experiencing the terrible outbreak of COVID-19. Almost all the countries in the world are going through partial or full lockdown to defeat the deadly outbreak.
Pakistan is also under partial or full lockdown in different areas of the country. Food security is a big challenge in pakistan as well due to lower than potential capacity production of agriculture goods. Reasons of lower potential growth in agriculture sector ranges from old cultivation techniques to Global warming.
The fear of poverty and hunger is accelerated with the current situation of corona outbreak. Pakistan can beat the fear by focusing on its agriculture sector.
The ongoing season is wheat cultivation season and majority is depending on wheat as staple food. Fortunately the summer season has VARIETY of fruits and vegetables in it.
The idea is we need to define SOPs to completely focus on wheat cultivation along with fruits and vegetables. It will provide the self sufficiency in food and provide an ample chance to people to engage in agri based small business. This will ensure food availability and contribute to employment. However strict compliance to health safety measures is important.
The state needs to chalk out a plan to monitor agriculture sector particularly this time for wheat cultivation process. It should encourage and subsidise the cultivation of vegetables and fruits on large scale to ensure bulk of availability of immune rich fruits and vegetables. It will boost employment in agriculture sector and minimise food insecurity challenges directly proportional to COVID-19 outbreak.
